October 24, 2003 - SW Chemicals to Present at ADDITIVES 2004
Sherwin-Williams Chemicals will present a paper highlighting the effectiveness of Kemgard products in high-temperature engineering plastics (e.g. Nylon) at the upcoming ADDITIVES 2004 Conference. ADDITIVES 2004 is being held on March 22 - 24, 2004 in Clearwater, FL. This important conference will highlight recent developments in a variety of additives for plastics.

The title of the paper is "Stabilization of Flame Retardant High Temperature Resin Systems". The following abstract has been submitted:

"When brominated flame retardants such as brominated polystyrene are used in high temperature resins they are often subject to degradation. Through the use of metal phosphate complexes this degradation can be limited. Positive results include a lighter color FR compound and lower levels of decomposition products. This produces less corrosion and subsequent machine wear. There is also minimal loss in FR properties as the compound is processed. TGA and other data will be presented showing the stabilization results."

July 1, 2003 - Kemgard Products Featured in Plastics Additives & Compounding® Products
Kemgard products were recently featured in the technical/trade journal 'Plastic Additives & Compounding' (March/April 2003). In an article covering various types of flame retardant technologies, an entire section on Kemgard products was included. This section, entitled "Molybdenum and Zinc Flame Retardants", references the cost-effective performance of Kemgard products for flame retardance and smoke suppression in PVC, polyamide (Nylon) and epoxy composite systems.

The article describes the multi-mechanistic performance of Kemgard products obtained through a combination of char formation, heat/oxygen quenching, and synergistic interaction with halogenated compounds to interrupt vapor-phase combustion propagation (via capture of reactive free radicals). The article also references the use of Kemgard as nontoxic alternatives to antimony oxide and the improvements in dynamic processing stability offered by our new HPSS and MZM products in PVC applications. http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/journal/1464391X
